Election Protection Joins National Voter Registration Day Efforts
National 1-866-OUR-VOTE Hotline Available to Assist with Registration Questions
and Verify Registration Status

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 23, 2014 – Today, Election Protection joins hundreds of organizations across the country in a national effort to register people to vote, National Voter Registration Day.  The nationwide nonpartisan Election Protection (EP) Hotline, 1-866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683), will be live from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST to verify voter’s registration status and answer questions. People may also register to vote with Rock the Vote, an EP partner.

This single day of coordinated activity will not only work to register thousands of eligible Americans, but also educate them about election information in their state so they are prepared to vote on November 4th. After National Voter Registration Day, the Election Protection Hotline will continue to be answered live during business hours (9:30 am-5:30 pm) Monday through Friday and expand to evening and weekend hours as Election Day approaches.

“This is the first election in the post-Shelby era, one in which Election Protection is responding to loss of one of the most important protections of the Voting Rights Act,” said Chris Melody Fields, Manager of Legal Mobilization and Strategic Campaigns at the Lawyers’ Committee.  “We want to make sure you know about the voting rules in your state so you are able to participate in our democracy. If you have any questions about voting or would like to report any registration issues please call the Election Protection Hotline at 1-866-OUR-VOTE.”

Election Protection aims to assist all eligible voters to get prepared to vote.  Helpful tips, reminders and action steps include:

  • Know your registration deadline -- Visit EP’s state pages
  • Verify your registration status by calling 1-866-OUR-VOTE
  • Encourage your social media contacts, friends and family to register to vote or update their registration if they have moved or changed their name since the last election
  • Get Election Protection’s free smartphone app -- Text EPAPP to 90975
