Voting in Wyoming

When You Can Vote

Election Day: Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, or until the last person in line at 7 p.m. has voted. 

Absentee voters may vote in person at the County Clerk’s office or by mail no sooner than 28 days before Election Day (45 days for military or overseas voters). Absentee ballots must be received by the County Clerk no later than 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.

You are eligible to vote in Wyoming if you:

  • Are a U.S. citizen
  • Are at least 18 years old by Election Day
  • Are a resident of Wyoming
  • Live in the precinct in which you want to vote

You are NOT eligible to vote in Wyoming if:

  • You are registered to vote in another state
  • You are in prison or jail for a felony conviction.
  • A judge has specifically ruled that you are not able to vote.

Restorative Requirements

Convicted individuals that are first time, nonviolent felons, will automatically have their right to vote restored when they complete their supervision or are discharged from an institution on or after January 1, 2010. Individuals who completed their sentence prior to January 1, 2010, are required to apply for restoration of the right to vote.

You may preregister to vote in Wyoming

  • if you will be 18 by Election Day

How to register 

Deadline to Register

  • You must register to vote by August 5, 2024 for the primary election on August 20, 2024 
  • You must register to vote by October 21, 2024 for the general election on November 5, 2024
  • Wyoming also permits election day voter registration at your polling location, which you can find here.

You can check if you are registered to vote by contacting your County Clerk’s office.

Eligibility: You are eligible to vote in Wyoming if you are–

  • 18 years of age or older on Election Day
  • A United States Citizen
  • A Resident of Wyoming
  • Have a valid ID
  • Not declared to be mentally incompetent by a court
  • Not convicted of a felony (unless you were pardoned or have had your rights restored in Wyoming)

You are not eligible to vote in Wyoming if you are registered to vote in another state and haven’t withdrawn your registration.

Register to Vote by submitting the Wyoming Voter Registration Form to your County Clerk’s office. Instructions can be found on the Secretary of State’s website.

Voting Early & by Absentee Ballot

How to get an absentee ballot:

  • You can call, write, or email your County Clerk’s office at any time in 2024 prior to Election Day to request an absentee ballot by using this form. Voters who are overseas or in the military should use this form. Emails should include “Absentee Ballot Request” in the subject line. 
  • Absentee ballots will be mailed beginning July 23, 2024 for the August 20, 2024 primary election, and beginning October 8, 2024 for the November 5, 2024 general election for most voters. Ballots for overseas and military voters will be mailed earlier.
  • Absentee ballots requested between the dates listed above and Election Day on November 5, 2024 will be sent as soon as possible.

Your absentee ballot must be received by your County Clerk by 7:00 pm on Election Day. Note: a ballot will not be counted if it’s only postmarked by 7:00 pm on Election Day but has not been received by the County Clerk.

How to return the completed absentee ballot: 

Voters who Vote Absentee in their First Federal Election must enclose a copy of their photo ID or document bearing their name and residence address in the envelope with their voted ballot.

Identification Requirements

Voter Registration

To register to vote in Wyoming you should provide one of the following:

  • Valid Wyoming Driver’s License
  • Valid US Passport
  • Valid ID Issued by Another State
  • Out of State Driver’s License or Non-driver ID
  • Valid Federal issued ID
  • Valid Local Government issued ID
  • Valid Tribal ID
  • Valid Student ID from State School

A United States Military Card or an ID card issued to a dependent of a member of the United States Armed Forces are also both acceptable.

If you do not have one of the documents in the list above, you may obtain a free Wyoming Identification Card from your local Driver Services office or provide two or more of the following documents:

  • Certificate of US Citizenship
  • Social Security Card
  • Voter Registration Card from another State or County
  • Certificate of Report of Birth issued by US Department of State
  • Certified Copy of US Birth Certificate
  • US Naturalization Documents
  • Draft Record
  • Valid Federal issued ID
  • Valid ID Issued by Another State

Note that an original or certified birth certificate must bear an official seal

Voting In-Person

Effective July 1, 2021, Wyoming voters are required to show an acceptable form of identification when voting in person. Any of the following documents will be accepted:

  • Medicare or Medicaid Card issued by the government
  • Valid Military ID
  • Medicare or Medicaid Card issued by the government
  • Valid Military ID
  • Valid Wyoming Driver’s License
  • Wyoming ID Card
  • Valid US Passport
  • Valid ID Issued by Another State
  • Out of State Driver’s License or Non-driver ID
  • Valid Tribal ID
  • Valid Student ID from State School

If you do not have these IDs, you must provide two or more of the following:

  • Valid ID Issued by Another State
  • Valid Federal issued ID
  • Draft Record
  • US Naturalization Documents
  • Certified Copy of US Birth Certificate
  • Certificate of Report of Birth issued by US Department of State
  • Voter Registration Card from another State or County
  • Social Security Card
  • Certificate of US Citizenship

Note that an original or certified birth certificate must bear an official seal

To register to vote, you may show one of the following forms of ID: 

  • United States Passport;
  • Valid driver’s license or ID card issues by any state;
  • ID issued by a federal, state or local government/agency;
  • Photo ID card issued by the University of Wyoming, a Wyoming community college, or a Wyoming public school;
  • United States Military ID; or
  • ID card issued to a Dependent of a member of the United States Armed Forces.

OR voter may show any two of the following to:

  • Certification of United States Citizenship;
  • Certificate of Naturalization;
  • United States Military Draft Record;
  • Voter’s Registration Card from another State or County;
  • United States Social Security Card;
  • Certification of Birth Abroad issued by the Department of State;
  • Original or certified copy of a birth certificate bearing an official seal; and
  • Any other form of identification issued by an official agency of the United States or a State.

Voters must show one of the following in order to vote:

  • WY Driver’s License or ID Card
  • Tribal ID Card
  • Valid US Passport
  • US Military Card
  • DL or ID Card from Another State
  • University of Wyoming Student ID
  • Wyoming Community College Student ID
  • Wyoming Public School Student ID
  • Valid Medicare Insurance Card*
  • Valid Medicaid Insurance Card*
  • Valid Wyoming Concealed Firearm Permit

If you don’t have any of the forms of ID listed above, you can get a free Wyoming Identification Card from your local Driver Services office. 

If You Have Moved Within Your State

Move within the same county

If you moved within the same county, you must update your address with your County Clerk. If you don’t do so before election day, you can do so at the polling place corresponding with your new address.

Move to a different county If you moved to a different county, you can re-register by contacting the County Clerk in your new county. If you do not do so before election day, you can go to the polling place corresponding with your new address to register and vote at the same time.

If You Are in the Military or Are an Overseas Voter

Voting Military

Service members and their dependents may register and request a ballot using the federal voter registration/ballot request form (“FPCA”). You will have the following identification options when completing the form:

  • Last Four Digits of your Social Security Number
  • Your Wyoming Driver’s License Number
  • Option to Indicate that you do not have the Requested ID

Voting Overseas

U.S. citizens living overseas may register and request a ballot using the overseas voter registration/ballot request form. You will have the following identification options when completing the form:

  • Last Four Digits of your Social Security Number
  • Your Wyoming Driver’s License Number
  • Option to Indicate that you do not have the Requested ID

How to get an absentee ballot:

Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot

The Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot (FWAB) is a back-up ballot that can be used by military voters.  You can use this FWAB whether you are located inside or outside the United States (including APO and FPO addresses), provided you are away from your voting residence for service-related activities.  For specific instructions, visit the FVAP’s Wyoming-specific FVAP page.  

If You Have a Felony Convictions

Eligibility to Vote

If you have been convicted of a felony, and your conviction has not been overturned, you must have your voting rights restored in Wyoming, regardless of the state in which you were convicted. 

If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor or have been charged with a felony and are awaiting trial, you are still eligible to vote and may register and request an absentee ballot.

Your voting rights may be automatically restored if you were convicted for a first-time, nonviolent felony and you’ve completed your sentence or all probationary terms.
